Observance of World Thalassemia Day at NWSM


The Community Medicine Department and Social Welfare Society of Northwest School of Medicine organized an event to observe World Thalassemia Day on May 9th, 2024, which was globally recognized on May 8th. The event aimed to raise awareness and support individuals affected by Thalassemia, featuring enlightening presentations by Muhammad Adeel, Alina Alamgir, Gohar Zaman, and Ahmad Shah Abdali, focusing on the importance of Thalassemia awareness and the role of community support in addressing the condition.
Additionally, an Awareness Videography Competition session further enhanced the dissemination of key messages regarding Thalassemia, with 7 videos submitted from different classes, participated by Saim Sikandar, Umair Hamza, Salman Salarzai, Sara Haider, Hadiqa Murad, and Mehwish. A poster competition was also part of the session, actively participated by 1st and 2nd year students.
The event was expertly coordinated by General Secretary of Social Welfare Society Burhan Ali Shah, Additional Secretary Salman Khan, Blood Wing Coordinator Umair Hamza, and Sub-Coordinator Ateed Ur Rehman, who ensured the smooth execution of activities. Dr.
Almas Fasih Khattak, serving as the staff advisor, provided invaluable guidance and support throughout the event’s planning and implementation process. The active participation of faculty members from the Community Medicine Department underscored the institution’s commitment to fostering social welfare initiatives and promoting community engagement.
The Blood Donation Registration Desk was set up for students, with over 100 donors registered for donations. The previous day, on May 8th, 17 students visited the Fatmid Thalassemia Center, where 7 students donated blood for Thalassemia patients.
